Girl Commentary
Girl is a short story that is written by Jamaica Kincaid. The whole story consists of one single line. The mother is having an argument with her daughter about how she should be meeting a girl's standards in a society.
"You are really going to be the kind of woman who the baker won’t let near the bread" (Kincaid 1). This is an example, the mother uses to shows her daughter the consequences she would be facing if she becomes a "Slut". The girl was only able to interrupt twice during the whole conversation in order for her to defend herself. While I was reading this short story, I realized how these types arguments and issues separate mothers and their daughters. This is conveyed in the overall theme of mom/daughter relationship, and their sexual reputation.
Anas, your blog was short, but it was informative. One piece of advice that I have for you is too give the right information. Girl consists of many lines, one page worth of lines, but is only one sentence. However, your analysis of the quote was eye opening and interesting.
ReplyDeleteI like how you're giving us context on what's currently happening. I also agree with your blog post Mr. Anas because arguments do mess up a lot of relationships. Things can be said that aren't meant to hurt but they still do anyways. However, I would encourage you to add more analysis because you were going in a very good path and you ended it mid way. Overall, this was a great blog post. Nice job mate !!
ReplyDeleteThough I had read a broad variety of reviews on 'Girl' and been witness to many of my peers sharing their diverse interpretations on the short story, I have quite literally never heard any of my peers talk about how the mother's insistence may have obstructed her relationship to her daughter. I also liked how instead of taking the tangent I've seen so many of my other peers venture on and associating the short story to gender roles and sexism, you made a viable argument (connecting it to the themes parental values and family) of saying that "the mother's parochial and monochromatic views and the manner she shares them - with absolutely no consideration for her daughter's opinion creates this divide between the mother and her daughter."
ReplyDeleteI found you point of view on the theme of the story was interesting as I didn't see it that way. The way I interpreted the mother called her daughter a slut was that she was was simply being and abusive parent but you thought it had a deeper meaning to it. There isn't much to criticize on your point of view as I feel like the connections we both made were very similar but great job.
